Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Oil — A Textured Tribute to Sofia’s Golden Landmark

Some buildings are more than architecture — they are emotion, memory, and identity.
This is my oil painting interpretation of the iconic Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, one of the most recognizable symbols of Bulgaria’s capital.

Created with a palette knife and thick impasto technique, this artwork transforms the cathedral’s golden domes into living texture. Instead of fine brush details, I used bold, expressive strokes to capture light, depth, and atmosphere — the feeling of standing in front of the cathedral on a calm Sofia afternoon.

My goal was not just realism, but emotion.
The warmth of the gold, the rhythm of the architecture, and the silence of the square are all translated into layered oil paint.

This piece is part of my ongoing exploration of emblematic European landmarks, painted in my signature expressive palette knife style. Each artwork is an attempt to preserve the spirit of a place through texture and color rather than precision.
